Option 2 · I don’t have a ring
Measure without an existing ring
You’ll need a thin strip of paper, a pen, and a standard bank card or ruler for calibration. Non-stretch string can replace the paper: wrap, mark, then straighten it gently without pulling it longer. Avoid elastic or stretchy thread.
1Wrap and mark
Wrap a thin paper strip around the base of your finger, snug without squeezing. Mark where the starting end overlaps. Check that the loop can pass over your knuckle.
2Flatten and match
Calibrate your screen with a standard bank card or ruler. Lay the strip flat without stretching. Align its starting end with START and adjust MARK to your pen mark, not the end of the strip.
3Make a fresh wrap
Lock the reading, then wrap and mark again. Measure the new marked length to check agreement and see your estimated finger circumference.

Even a precise millimeter measurement can feel too tight or loose if you overlook finger anatomy and band construction. Keep these four industry principles in mind before buying:
1. The Knuckle Rule
If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both areas. Your ideal ring size is typically halfway between the two measurements so the ring slides over the knuckle smoothly without spinning freely at the base.
2. The Wide Band Rule
Ring bands wider than 4 mm (such as cigar bands or wide men's wedding bands) cover more skin surface and fit tighter than narrow solitaire rings. Order half a size larger (+0.5 US / +1 UK)for bands 6 mm or wider.
3. Measure in Late Afternoon
Finger size naturally fluctuates throughout the day. Cold morning temperatures contract tissue, while evening warmth and daily activity cause mild expansion. Always measure at comfortable room temperature in the late afternoon.
4. Comfort Fit vs Standard Fit
Standard rings are flat inside. Comfort fit rings have a gently domed interior that slides easily over knuckles and displaces less skin. Jewelers often suggest choosing a quarter size smaller for comfort fit styles.
